The Meaning of AWARE-NESS

Resting as Awareness Itself

For the part of me that is remembering what it means to rest as awareness itself.

1. The Meaning of AWARE-NESS

The suffix “-ness” turns an activity into a quality of being. It transforms a passing act of noticing into a continuous state of presence. ‘Aware’ describes a momentary act; ‘Awareness’ describes the open, spacious field in which all experience appears and dissolves.

In meditation, this shift is profound. ‘Aware’ is something we do; ‘Awareness’ is what we are. When you rest as awareness, you are not trying to control or analyze anything — you are simply allowing life to unfold in the sky of consciousness.

2. The Power of ‘-ness’

Adding ‘-ness’ adds a sense of stability and ongoingness. It points to something that continues — like the sky that remains even when clouds pass. Awareness feels stable because it is not bound by the mind’s movements.

Examples:

  • Aware → Awareness — from doing to being.
  • Kind → Kindness — from action to essence.

3. Two Stages of Realization

Both ‘I am as awareness’ and ‘I am awareness itself’ are true, pointing to different stages of realization. The first honors relationship; the second reveals unity.

  • ‘I am as awareness’ — gentle, relational, early or mid-practice stage; helps the self align with awareness.
  • ‘I am awareness itself’ — direct, nondual, mature realization; reveals unity beyond self-other distinction.

Neither phrase is more true. One prepares the ground; the other reveals the fruit. Use both naturally — one opens the door, the other walks through.

4. Commentary on Both Phrases

‘I am as awareness’ acknowledges that we are learning to rest within the field of knowing. It feels relational and gentle — safe for a nervous system still healing from fear or anxiety.

‘I am awareness itself’ expresses the deeper truth — that there is no separate observer at all. Awareness is what we have always been. When glimpsed, it brings peace and freedom.

5. Mini-Course — Morning Practice of Awareness

A gentle 10–15 minute practice upon waking.

  • Stage One — Resting as Awareness

Begin lying or sitting comfortably. Feel the natural breath. Whisper inwardly: “I rest as awareness.” Sense yourself resting in a vast, quiet field. Let thoughts and sensations arise and dissolve like clouds.

  • Tips:
  • Keep attention soft.
    • Feel the body’s safety.
    • Include all emotions in awareness.
  • Stage Two — I Am Awareness Itself

When openness stabilizes, deepen to: “I am awareness itself.” Notice there is no ‘I’ apart from the awareness knowing this moment. Relax into pure being — clear, luminous, whole.

  • Integration:
  • Alternate between both phrases through the day.
    • Pause often to sense awareness during activity.
    • End your day with gratitude for each moment of presence.

6. Reflection Prompts

  • What does awareness feel like in my body right now?
  • When fear arises, can I rest as awareness instead of as the feeling?
  • What happens when I drop the ‘I’ and simply notice awareness itself?

Closing Blessing

May I remember that awareness is my true home — clear, open, kind.
May I rest in awareness itself and let all experiences come and go in peace.
